Ryan Wilson Coaching Tips
Name:
Are you an Athlete(Avid Pole Vaulter), Coach, or Both?
What is your Personal Best or Your Athletes Best (Basic Background)
- My personnel best is 14'6". And constantly improving
1) What is the single most important thing in the Pole Vault? - To my experience the plant is the most important
aspect of the vault. A fast approach, a strong,
high plant will take care of itself.
2) What makes a great approach? - A good approach starts with high knees and
constantly increasing the speed.
3) What makes a great plant? - A great plant starts with a good approach.
Then from there its a high plant, driving
the knee, jumping off the ground, and holding
the press.
4) What makes a great swing up? - A great swing up results from a good plant.
A forceful swing of the long leg will also
help.
5) What makes a great top? - Again, it's the plant. But, without getting
upside down and pulling through you're not
going to get there.
6) What advice do you have for the off/pre season? - Vaulting! And of course lifting, running,
and all the usual for any sport.
7) What are your favorite drills for the Pole Vault? - I would have to say that my favorite drill
would be "kip-ups." That's where you hang
in pull-up position and pull your legs over
the bar so the bar end up in your hips.
8) What advice do you have on a Vaulters grip width? - A forearms length and a fist.
9) What advice do have on a height of a Vaulters hand-hold?- What ever the vaulters confidence level
and experience should express the height
of the hand-hold.
10) What advice do you have on how to keep the Pole Vault Safe? - Don't let practice get out of hand. Always
have a coach be there. Proper equipment.
And know what your doing.
