1) What is the single most important thing in the Pole Vault?
2) What makes a great approach?
3) What makes a great plant? - Keeping the pole MOVING into the plant
and EXTENSION!!!
4) What makes a great swing up? - Good angle of take-off and drag back arms
stay up!!!!
5) What makes a great top? - The great bottom...and do not watch the bar.
6) What advice do you have for the off/pre season? - Yoga, weights, hills, visualization work.
7) What are your favorite drills for the Pole Vault? - 2,4,6 step straight pole take-offs
track approaches and rope climbing up-side-down
8) What advice do you have on a Vaulters grip width? - It shortens with technical improvement.
9) What advice do have on a height of a Vaulters hand-hold?- Hold higher (one fist or sometimes a finger at a time )
only when the athlete is planting and swinging
into the pit consistently.
10) What advice do you have on how to keep the Pole Vault Safe? - Athletic Directors must require a coach to take
X amount of inservice, go to clinics and view safety
videos to be allowed to coach.
