What is your Personal Best or Your Athletes Best (Basic Background)
- I just started vaulting this year after having not vaulted for two years, and with the help of Oran Mitchell I have progressed from 1o feet, to now being within sptting distance of 17. I am in high school
1) What is the single most important thing in the Pole Vault? - The most important aspect of the vault is to have a controlled accelerated run, then push through your power shoulder as high as possible, jump up as high as possible, bring the trail leg back while driving your knee to achieve penetration. That is the most important because if you have a strong solid bottom, then it will give your sweep the power to get on bigger poles, and most of all get you in proper position to go over the top.
2) What makes a great approach? - A great approach is one that is accelerated and the last 3-4 strides you are digging your toes while driving your knees high
3) What makes a great plant? - A great plant comes when you reach what I call a "C" position. A C position is when you are driving through your power arm, bringing the knee up and trail leg cocked back
4) What makes a great swing up? - Once again, a great swing is followed by a solid plant. If You sweep early it is not a fundamental swing. A good swing will feel nice and smooth, and your sweep will end up takiung the pole up
