Warren Evans Coaching Tips
Name:
Are you an Athlete(Avid Pole Vaulter), Coach, or Both?
What is your Personal Best or Your Athletes Best (Basic Background)
1) What is the single most important thing in the Pole Vault? - With out a doubt the plant
2) What makes a great approach? - A Steady controlled accelerated run with
the last three stides fast and tall
3) What makes a great plant? - A high pole carry, a fast push with the arms
straight up and slightly forward
4) What makes a great swing up? - A big delay followed by an active aggresive
paddle with the arms and a powerfull kick
of the take off leg
5) What makes a great top? - Hitting a great I formation on the pole and
an active push off the top of the pole
6) What advice do you have for the off/pre season? - OFF SEASON:- Hit the gym and gymnastics hard,
and work on your speed and drills.
PRE SEASON:- Make sure your run up is working
7) What are your favorite drills for the Pole Vault? - The rock back, the single hand, and the hang
back.
8) What advice do you have on a Vaulters grip width? - To start off with the length of the arm, then
after a time and some experience, shroten by
no more than two hands
9) What advice do have on a height of a Vaulters hand-hold?- To start with stand the pole up, reach up with
the left hand(if a right hand vaulter)then
find the top hand by placing the left thumb
into the right arm pit. After a while of vaulting
you should be trying to grip as high as the
pole will let you, but make sure it's a slow
progression, too quick can cause dangers to
the vaulter.
10) What advice do you have on how to keep the Pole Vault Safe? - Take the event serious, it is a dangerous event.
Make sure you have the correct equipment, poles,
mats, uprights. Don't be afraid to give some
assistance to the vaulter by giving them a little
push on take off so the make the mats.
