Are you an Athlete(Avid Pole Vaulter), Coach, or Both?
What is your Personal Best or Your Athletes Best (Basic Background)
1) What is the single most important thing in the Pole Vault?
2) What makes a great approach? - a great run and a high plant
3) What makes a great plant? - a great "C" position; high and dynamic plant
4) What makes a great swing up? - driving the right knee and keeping the left leg back until the time is right to swing it; swing the hips to the hands and invert
5) What makes a great top? - stay inverted; become one with the pole and pull then turn
6) What advice do you have for the off/pre season? - lift regularly and maintain good cardiovascular condition
7) What are your favorite drills for the Pole Vault? - countdowns
hanging stub
Bubka
penetrations
cart
8) What advice do you have on a Vaulters grip width? - I personally use the distance between my wrist and my elbow
9) What advice do have on a height of a Vaulters hand-hold?- I hold at about twelve feet, and I am about five feet tall, and vault at around nine feet. I just follow the advice of my coach, the best guy in the world- Mr. Joe Sanford.
10) What advice do you have on how to keep the Pole Vault Safe? - I think that as long as the vaulter is ready to fly and has drilled endlessly, everything should be all right. The vaulter must be prepared mentally and physically by his/her coach, and there should be no such thing as just getting on a pole. We at McDowell High try to drill until we can do it in our sleep. and thus our bodies take over even if our minds lose it.
