brian zaglauer Coaching Tips
Name:
Are you an Athlete(Avid Pole Vaulter), Coach, or Both?
What is your Personal Best or Your Athletes Best (Basic Background)
- My personal best is 17'11/4". I've coached for three years and have had one boy at 15'7" and one at 14'6". I have also had one girl jump 11'2".
1) What is the single most important thing in the Pole Vault? - What you do in the last ten meters of the run.
2) What makes a great approach? - Not pressing, standing up tall and being consistant.
3) What makes a great plant? - Starting the plant two steps out. Not allowing your left hand to drop below your belly button. Bringing strait up through your body, trying not to round house to much and not planting the right hand to far behind the head.
4) What makes a great swing up? - Position at take-off, keeping a long trail leg and agrasively rowing to the groan. Remember, dont swing off the ground.
5) What makes a great top? - Thinking about holding the legs back while relaxing the shoulders and pulling with both hands.
6) What advice do you have for the off/pre season? - OFF Season, have fun and maybe run and lift.
Pre season, get strong and fast/ work on drills
7) What are your favorite drills for the Pole Vault? - blow box/ tramp/ lock out 4 step vault/ high bar
8) What advice do you have on a Vaulters grip width? - plant the pole with your top hand then put your left in a comfortable postion.
9) What advice do have on a height of a Vaulters hand-hold?- if your pole is bending to much, your holding to high.
10) What advice do you have on how to keep the Pole Vault Safe? - teach sound basics and respect. I dont think vaulters should wear helmets. They give you a false sence of protection.
