I am a junior at Purdue University. I am 5'11" and 170lbs. I was the Indiana High School State Champion in 1994 and runner-up at indoor National Scholastic in 1994. My personal best is now 17' 3/4" (5.20m) at the Purdue Invitational in 1996. I jump on a 4.90m 16.6 Spirit and spit on anyone who says I can't jump 5.50. I'm looking to make the transition to 5m poles this winter to aid in the 5.50 jump.

I will be a Senior this year, and it will be my third year vaulting. I vaulted 10' at my second meet the first year I vaulted. I finished off the season at 10'6". Last year 11" was my highest vault. I have always been able to bend the pole but I have trouble getting vertical. We don't vault out of year round here so our regular season can become a little snowy. I'm going to vault a lot higher this year, God willing.

Paul Heglar
I vaulted from 1959 until I retired in 1975. I was the 3rd high school vaulter in history to clear 16' (16'3"-Muir HS 1966) My personal best was in the National AAU Championship in Bakersfield, CA - 1970, where I placed 2nd to Bob Seagren both at 17'2". I walked away from the sport until 1993, when I decided to lose the 40 lbs I had gained over the years and began jumping in Masters Competitions (My mind says I can still jump 17' but my body is telling me I'm crazy). I started coaching seriously about 3 years ago at our local high school. It's been a real challenge because I live at the North Shore of Lake Tahoe and our track is usually still under 3 to 4 foot of snow when our State meet occurs. Two years ago I built an indoor runway - so the weather doesn't stop us. I use the USATF Pole Vault Manual that is referred to in Rick Attig's spot - EVERY coach should use it!!!

Well, I have vaulted for over 8 years but have never went to any seminars and really never had a specialized vault coach. I currently hold the California Northern Section Meet Record with 14'9". This height gained my entrance into the CaState Meet in 92. In 93 I went to the Ca State meet for Junior Colleges with a height of 15'6". This is my Current P.R. As senior at California State University, Chico I hope to gain entrance to Nationals with probably something around 16'.075"-16'6". Who knows I can only hope that I can finally learn the last part of the Vault. I have almost no extension and do not turn until half way over the bar which kills about 6" of height. My keys are big pole-run fast (With smooth plant). I need finese!

I've been vaulting since age 13. I started because the event looked fun and because my coach laughed at me when I asked if I could try. He told me if I could clear 7 ft. at practice, he would let me jump. I cleared 10ft just to tick him off. Vaulted 14' in high school and 16' in one year at college. I have been coaching at North Central High and Spokane Community College for 9 years. My dad was an olympic official.

I competed with Republic of China (Taiwan) National Team for a couple of years and did some coaching there. I trained with Don Baird for five years and have had the opportunity to train with and pick the brains of several Olympic Medalists and several of this country's elite for over 15 years. I do not officially coach any more (I am a physician with a lot of knowledge of applied kinesiology) but have mentored many young people over the years. I consider both my eyes and brain well-grounded. My P.R. is 4.75 (15'7", 1978) and more recently I jumped 14'6" (1994). I have been the National Indoor Champion for my age group two of the last five years despite a serious lack of training time.
